R.L.Hearn Power Plant

R.L. Hearn Generating Station, built in 1951 and abandon in 1983. The plant burned coal, but as time progressed, some of the coal boilers had been replaced to burn natural gas. The Hearn plant also had the tallest smoke stack (705 ft) in all of North America, however it lost its title when the Inco Superstack (1,247 ft) was built in Sudbury. The Plant closed down due to a number of reasons. One being air pollution in the Toronto area and the slowly aging equipment. Since then this building has sat and battled with the elements. For one exploring this place, it really gives you an idea as to what it takes to produce power for our city.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful locations I have explored. Through the vast network of hallways, down to the individual decaying rooms, its hard to imagine this place in working order.

Don Vally Brickworks.

A few shots from one of my last visits to the Brickworks. Plans have been made to convert this facility into a garden/nursery. Plans for this location have changed from time to time.
This place will be missed and has been one of the coolest places I have ever explored.

Abandon Barn

I had come across an old abandon bar while driving thought the county side. Neatly set back in the trees and tall grass, in which is almost impossible to been seen from the road. Not for a true Urban Explorer, who can see these things from a mile away.
Anywho, the barn was empty, but got a hand full of shots that where worth the trip and time.

Brickworks In The Light

Here are some shot's from the Brickworks once again. With HDR and lovely lighting that put this set to the top of my list, moving the bar up to a new level.
I took a morning out of my day to come back and see whats new. Not much has changed at all since I was last there. I was thinking that the crew had started to restore, but I don't think there planning to until another week or two. (But don't take my word on that matter) The place had been cleaned up meaning there wasnt much decay and was missing some character. Non the less it was a fun trip and I got some nice shots. That’s my day in a nut shell.

Ringwood Manner

“Built in 1876 by Barnabus Gibson, a prominent railroad contractor, Ringwood displays a composite of 19 century Canadian architecture styles. It was converted to the head office of co-steal international in 1976". This old house was made a historical monument, but after the fire demolishing most of the house any thing lies for the houses future…sad to see this lovely home go to such a waste and nothing is going to save it. Here are some choice pics taken sometime after the fire. . . Come. Step inside; Don't be shy.

Don Valley Brickworks

These where taken in the morning of January 2007. What I like most about this place is the lighting, which gives everything a beautiful relaxing glow. Many explorers come here to photograph this place, and many more come here to express themselves with graffiti, which adds beautiful color to many of my shots.The Brickworks got its name by obviously making bricks. Many of the bricks for Toronto’s homes where supplied from this factory, making it a famous Toronto landmark. A large quarry is located just behind the factory, but now it’s only known as a cat walk for dogs and others to enjoy.
This place is going to be restored, which I think they should leave alone. This will cause the roof to be fixed, meaning that there will be no more magical beams of light shining down on the cold floor. We will lose all this beauty in decay. And think about all the people who spent time making the beautiful graffiti art work on the walls... it will all be lost, but this is only my opinion. You can look at this place how ever you want.

Whitby Psychiatric Hospital

Main hall to cottage 12. Rehab Center, built in 1918, with a cottage like system to keep the patents in a natural sun-filled, fresh air lifestyle. The intention was to replace 999 Queen Street West. The Whitby Psych was built in 1917 and 1918 by prison labor paying from 55 cents to one dollar and hour. It was used for a war camp for the solders in World War I. Later it was turned back into a Psychiatric Hospital in the early 1920’s. Time eventually took its toll the buildings and was later closed in 1996. Due to this a new one had to be built and so they did. Building one V-shaped building to replace the many old ones, which boasted a new Zink roof which lasts up to 100 years.

This place was finally taken down in the summer of 2005. Later, in 2006, the Power House and Laundry building were demolished as well. Only two cottages remain on site today, and will be restored some time in 2007. This place had 16 cottages to treat the sick and mental. One power house, two dining buildings, two Infirmary’s, a laundry building, stores, two acute pavilions, admin & receiving, cottage for the Dr., and last but not least a Rec. hall with a stage and gym.

Looking out to cottage 22. The Doctors house, as well as a school for nurses (hmmmmmmm). Before demo I would be looking at building 18, the men’s dining building, and the left wing of the men’s Infirmary (#19).
